Back in the NSSR -You don't know how lucky you are

Goddamn Firefox... this is going to be the second journal entry written tonight.
Pretty much, I was too busy this weekend to do much. On an unrelated note, I am now a 2nd Lieutenant in Halo 3. Thought however, has been devoted to Angels 2-uh- you'll see...

Que es en un Nombre?

Sir Sapo and I have been diligently struggling, er -talked on the phone about- making a name for our new project... ideas abound, like "Angels 28" or "Angels 30," or even this beauty of an idea:

It's pronounced "Angels Twenty-Ex (like Ecks)." Of course it loses a lot without taking proper care to say it right, so I'm leaning towards the family-friendly Angels 23. Yeah, we'll think of a cool subtitle like "Operation Prometheus: Assault on the Fortress of Fear; the Final Onslaught" Actually, that will probably be the name of the last mission...

Missions

So, if you were reading last time, there will be only three missions in this new super-project. Each mission will showcase different aspects of the engine, and of gameplay.

Mission 1: Pretty much like the Angels 22 Demo, with pretty islands and ships to blow up, and SAMs to dodge. There should be a rocket facility at the end to serve as a ridiculously cool-looking objective.
Mission 2: An urban nightime mission, where you are tasked with destroying a train loaded with vital material, with secondary objectives along the way. The main point is too show off cool lighting features, so there will be searchlights and flak everywhere(think Berlin '44 meets Baghdad '91)
Mission 3: The least well planned out, so we'll have wiggle-room. Essentially the setting is a mountaintop base in the middle of a "snowy wasteland," to use the words of my good friend, Sir Sapo. There will be a unholy blizzard obscuring the base of the mountain that you will fly out of near the end to meet a blue, blue sky -and some things bent on your destruction.

So three mission isn't a lot, but we're thinking of ways to add some replay value:

Aerocrafts

So in Angeles Viente-dos, you were going to be able to fly the Mk. II and Mk. III F/AX-44 Partisan fighters. Sapo and I thought it would be super-neat if there were once again different airplanes to choose from. The Partisan series(with another alternate Mk. III version that I'm working on) will be the main ones:

It would be even neater, however, if there were more interesting choices...

So, I ask you, the reader, if there's anything in the following picture that you would want to fly:

Take your time...

(F-45 *cough*)

[grin]

I'm disappointed (although not real surprised) to hear about the changes you guys are making to the A2X plan. It seems to be a poor combination of tech demo and game. Some form of multiplayer would make it a lot more replayable, but I don't think you guys are in a position to do that, really. Randomly generated levels, or levels that are generated from chunks, or even levels that have X number of AAA-turrets that will spawn in any of X+Y locations (randomly), would help.

I'd like to fly the MiG-47, and you would be shirking your duties if you didn't provide the F-22 and SU-37K to fly. The F-45A, while artistically attractive, doesn't really convey the feeling of a fighter or even a bomber. It just looks like a spyplane.

Once again, they all look cool. Here's my picks tho:

Su-37K, SR-91A and maybe the Su-55 (just because it looks freaky).

Only three levels? Thats such a disappointment. It reduces what could be an amazingly awesome game to an equally awesome tech demo. In any case, keep up the good work, but I still hope you'll decide to expand it. (feature sprawl, anyone?)

The Su-55 and F-45 were my initial choices, but they all look great so it's a tough decision. Sounds like if you do 3 great levels you're going to get some pressure to do more [grin]

Multiplayer is beyond our reach and requires waaay to much work to get functional, especially through Thomas... Sir Sapo and I's college firewalls. Random generation might work, but the results wouldn't be pretty. There should be a map editor, though, which was actually pretty fun(it's like the Halo 3!)

The F-22 is a wise choice, I guess I'm too tired of reading youtube comments about how the "[Russian fighter] is best fighter ever stupid gay amerikans" to think much of the Su-37.

Hm... by popular demand, the Su-37K is winning... The SR-91 would be interesting, because it'd ridiculously fast, plus it'd need to make classic donuts on a rope contrails and make a cool sound. The Su-55 was originally conceived as the Soviet Partisan equivalent, plus it has huge cannon in the wings.

Well, considering that when we were going to make the campaign, we only got one level ever made, this is an improvement. There will be a level editor and you'll be able to make levels so theoretically a suppository of maps, run by me, is possible, when Sir Sapo goes to the Air Force Academy.

The Su-55 will make the most sense to go with the Partisans, and the F-45 is pretty much the coolest design ever [grin] I need to make a short description for each of those fighters -someday when I'm bored. More levels? I may be able to throw some together later with the editor. Something like a map called "Commie Race" filled with 100 SAM sites, your mission is to fly to the checkpoint and back again. No, you'll love it, I promise...

More suggestions are welcome -I'm also interesting in why people pick what jet, too

Can we see screenshots of the map editor anytime soon? Multiplayer really doesn't take all that much work to get functional, if you know what you're doing, but you and Sapo have no way to test it, so meh.

The SU-37 IS a pretty badass plane. Another idea that I've just come up with is possibly the F-35 (or something sort of based off of it). The F-35 has a VTOL variant, so you could reintroduce that little nostalgic feel from A-20.

SR-91A for me.... it looks sweet :D

I haven't been on gamedev for a while, but still loving your work. I usually check out Sapo's blog, but I almost always gooo "Dang that's some nice art", haha.

Keep up the good work. Whatever happened with the girl, or is that a hush-hush topic? :P

Su-37K, F-35D and you must absolutely have the SR-91A. You could use it to zoom past flak and drop a single FAB/MOAB on those commies!

@Dragon88:
Well, LAN multiplayer is easy, we've had several games working over one at school, and we had FoT working partially over the internets. The problem is our lack of a dedicated server to get past our college firewalls. Sir Sapo has the details.

The Su-37 is overrated, it was a prototype that I think they backdated into an Su-30 for testbed work. No country has ordered it, and it flew over 10 years ago. The main reason it's famous is because of the publicity blitz Sukhoi went through to sell it(which is why Russian aircraft usually get more press). It can maneuver great, but so could the F-15SMTD/ACTIVE and the X-31, not to mention the F-22, which is the far more impressive airplane.

The F-35 would work pretty well, or rather just the F-35B, which we'll probably arbitrarily bump up to F-35D because it's The Future!

@Justin:
The girl thing kinda exploded... so yeah, not so good.

@Solidus117+Justin:
Sounds like the F-35D, SR-91A, Su-37K, and F-45 are go, now Sapo just needs to start getting on it...
