Once you have found your way to the goal node, I assume that the path you want to take is found by tracing up through the parents of that node?

It depends on how you structure the algorithm. The examples that abound on the net typically use a node structure whereby you assign a parent to each node as you move closer to the goal. If you are using that methodology then, yes, you trace back from the goal node.
