Tools for creating 2d graphics

Hi! I have just started to develop my first game. I have decided to make a simple 2D game. The programming is no problem, but I´m not at all used to creating graphics. I need a set of tools to make the graphics. For example I need a tool to make my sprites and tiles. Any suggestions? Regards Johan Johan Karlsson /Software Engineer
