We have about 500K unique visitors a month, about 800K visits a month, and about 1.9M page views.
Is that bad, good, or average for a site like this? Has the new "Article drive" improved those stats or have they stayed just about the same?
Hard to say.. we kind of straddle a few fences here and the market is much more fragmented and domain-specific than it used to be. We're a more programmer-centric community of game developers but we aren't topic specific.. so I'd say we're the largest game development site of that type. If you look at Stackoverflow you open up the arena to all developers.. they've siphoned off some of our search traffic because their format is more specific to Q&A where we tend to prefer more discussion. What's good about their site is the extreme usability of archived answers. If you look at Gamasutra you are looking at a ton of opinion-based articles (which tend to freak out our audience here).. sensationalism certainly works well there. They have about 3.5M page views a month but rely heavily on social media so their usefulness is often highly temporal. Other sites like Gamesindustry.biz and Develop generally have about half of our traffic levels.
The article drive has improved several stats pretty dramatically and increased the number of returning users.. which is a very positive thing because that's something that over time drives a site growth-wise. With each Google change we see dips in search traffic, so sometimes that evens out our efforts in terms of overall traffic.
