Are there any freeware 3d/2d game engines out there for win32/dx? Anyone want to give a newbie some background on engines please? ~Kev ~Lost newbie

One particular favorite 3D engine of mine is Genesis3D, although it''s gone two separate directions at this point. The free open-source version is now called "Jet3D" and can be found at www.jet3d.com
It''s a wonderful engine and it comes with a great world editor (also free). Give it a whirl. You won''t be disapointed.

CDX is also a pretty good 2D library (www.cdx.sk), and ClanLib too (www.clanlib.org), althouh I''ve never really used either of them. For my first game I used the GPDUMB engine from Windows Game Programming For Dummies, although I lot of people seem to not like that one. Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus includes an extended version of that, too.
Good luck!

Or, you could download the doom source code. It''s pretty similar to the build engine. It would be cool if 3d Realms would release the Duke Nukem source, though... I''m pretty sure you can get the Doom source code from www.idsoftware.com
