Epic Games, Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the business of San Diego, California-based game developer Psyonix Inc., the team behind the sports-action hit, Rocket League. The Psyonix team will continue to bring the full Rocket League experience across all platforms to all current and new players all over the world.

"Psyonix has always been a part of the Epic family, and we're happy to make it official," said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games. "We have great respect for how Psyonix has built an excellent team and an incredible community around Rocket League."

"We've been working closely with Epic since the early days of Unreal Tournament, and we've survived changing tides as partners, so combining forces makes sense in many ways," said Dave Hagewood, founder and studio director of Psyonix. "The potential of what we can learn from each other and accomplish together makes us truly excited for the future."

Founded in 2001, Psyonix has a long history with Epic, having contributed to titles in the Gears of War and Unreal Tournament franchises, as well as numerous other Unreal Engine games over the years. In 2015, Psyonix released the critically-acclaimed and award-winning vehicular sports title, Rocket League, which is now home to a community of more than 57 million players.

Psyonix currently employs 132 people at its San Diego headquarters, and the team continues to grow as it supports the Rocket League community.

The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers.

Epic and Psyonix currently expect to close the acquisition at the end of May or early June 2019, subject to customary closing conditions.
