Custom version of Enemy AI similar to Nemesis System: Is it possible?

I've been intrigued by the Nemesis AI System that is rolled out in the Shadow of Mordor series. I know it is a patented system but has anyone had success recreating a less involved version to enhance enemy AI in their games?

I like the idea that the enemies can remember previous interactions with the players and in effect change the storyline of the game based on those interactions. I'm comfortable developing in Unreal Engine and coding in C++ and I would like to try and experiment with some custom AI features with the Nemesis feel. This would be for my own personal projects just to see what can be accomplished on a small scale. Anyone tried anything like this with success? I'd be curious to hear what you were able to accomplish. Thank you for your time…
