Please, where could I find a good (and hopefully free) high/truecolor sprite editor? I could use Photoshop, but I was looking for a utility which would allow me to preview the animations in real time (switch back and forth between the frames as I''m making them).

Well... Microsoft has a free animated GIF editor. You load the frames in a sequence. Not your first choice, I know. I'm working on a sprite editor to make the graphics for my RTS game, but it's kind of on the backburner right now. When I finish it, I'll distribute it as freeware. Oh, and I'm writing it in VB, so it'll only be for Windows.

If you have photoshop then you also have ImageReady, why not use that?
