Aspects of WIN32 for Game Programming

Hi guys, I am actually a newbie who is already halfway through WIN32 and just wondering what aspects of WIN32 is essential for Game Programming. I have been told that for game programming, alot will depend on the DirectX or OpenGL. Confused and curious The road may be long, wind may be rough. The main parts of the win32 stuff thats important is the window creation, deletion, message pump, etc. Basically the window control portion of it.
