Hi there,
Thats a difficult question to answer, because it has too many answers!
The answer depends on what are you importing, how, etc.
3ds Max has an extensive scripting language, so... that should not be a problem.
Maya also has a very good scripting language (i would recommend this one if you can afford it , or download Maya Free Learning Edition).

But also you can use blender. Blender is known for being free and a really complete package, besides that you get to use python as the scripting language, plus all the interface and the view ports use openGL, so you are practically viewing your models as you would in your game.

There are many other good packages out there, milkshake3d, etc.
You could use PolyTrans to convert models.

I hope that helps your a lil.

Regards :D
