Anyone played Seikendensetu III?(sp) Or secret of mana 2 in english, well, anyway, the next game I was thinking I was gonna make character images similiar to this style. Is there a good place of reference or preferably a graphics tutorial on making this style of artwork? Sponge Factory --Muzlack

I''ve played some of SD3 and it has some really amazing artwork. I''m not a graphic artist myself, but I found this tutorial which uses some examples from the very game we''re talking about, so I''m guessing it shouldn''t be to far off?

im planning on making some tutorials on the subject matter as soon as i have full confidence that i can match the style completely. if youre going to make a sprite set for real, i would suggest make a sprite base first that you wish to base your characters off of, kindof like a skeleton.. they sd3 sprites are around 32 pixels high, but the werewolf dude is actually a little taller. some good practice would be to find a sprite rip of the characters in sd3, zoom in about 15 times, and see how they pixel the character, and notice the colors used and how they are placed... also pay attention to the sprite proportions, like arm length, headsize, etc. i found that a good method of practice is to actually take the 4 bit palette from lets say, Duran, and then make your own character out of the defined palette... great practice. i tried that and i came up with this...

ill pray that the image link worked, but if not, its here

also a good proactive for shading your characters... try only using a grey scale of 6 or so shades of grey to make a character.

or...check here for another example http://www.geocities.com/st0ven/ritz2.txt. i cant get too indepth about proportions without just going into a full blown indepth study, so go find some rips on the net, and then compare them to other ripped sprites (from the game game) to try to find the similarities that they share proportionwise. it will help you determine what their sprite bases might have looked like. well i hope this pointless ranting has helped in some regard... good luck because i love the art... especially the tile art
