Is installing DirectX 8.1 the same thing as installing the DirectX SDK? "tricks of the windows game programmin gurus" (the book I just started) uses DirectX 6. Will installing DirectX 8.1 cause any problems. Yes, Im a beginner.
They are quite different. The SDK is the Software Developers Kit, and surprise, comes with tools and libraries for developers. When you just install DirectX 8.1 you are usually just getting the runtimes that let you play the games that people made with the SDK, get it?

Oh and your second question, no it wont cause any problems. The nice thing about DirectX is all the new versions support the old versions. It''s all about COM baby!
However - if you install the SDK, you don''t need to install the runtimes seperatly - that gets done with the SDK.
