If you consider any of the Quake games good, then yes.

But then again, none of the quake games were written in C++, they were straight C

Why not Java?? Yeah,yeah..slow, interpreted code.. Won''t work.. yadda,yadda,yadda... But, then again, why not?? Write the engine core in C/C++ and the rest in Java with a little help from the JNI-god.. Not that I should consider it myself.. I would go for SmallTalk or FORTRAN
