How do I keep the polycount low on my models without making them look too much like a blob or a box? Is there any better program I could use? Hows Lightwave for modelling? Help much appreciated friends. Tankard Empty tankards are no good. Full they must be to be enjoyable.

Defeatist Attitude: It simply cannot be done.
Realist Attitude: It can be done just not today.

These are the two realms of programming.
"Is there any better program I could use?"
What are you using now?
A model looks the same on any program, the only way to make it look better is to raise the polycount. Learning how to hit a middle ground is a skill, not software.
EDIT: I should watch what I say, 3ds max does have an optimization function... =)

If you have Lightwave you should be fine. It''s not the market leader for games, but it is used by some developers.

Well, milkshape is a good modeler, but the best one, is the one you feel the most confortable with.

Rhino 3D is the best when it comes to 3D creation and rendering, you could always use Nurbs to make less polys

I highly recommend ms3d for low poly. It is easily the most efficiant program to make low poly models as it invilves you actully makeing the faces. so, well, you know how to place efficiant models when you are working from nothing
I like it. its easy, and its fast.
